What Documents Do You Need to Sell Your Junk Car?
Find out what paperwork is required to legally sell your junk car and get answers to common title questions.
One of the most common questions we receive from customers is about the paperwork needed to sell a junk car legally. Having the right documents ready can make the difference between a smooth, profitable sale and a frustrating experience. This guide explains exactly what you need to prepare before selling your junk car.
The Vehicle Title: Your Most Important Document
The title is the legal document that establishes ownership of your vehicle. In most states, this is the primary document needed to sell a car, even a junk one. Here's what you need to know about your title:
If You Have the Title:
Make sure:
- The title is in your name
- There are no liens listed on the title
- You've signed the title in the seller's section
- You've completed any required odometer disclosure statements
- All information is accurate and legible
If You Don't Have the Title:
Don't panic! While having a title makes the process easier, there are options:
- Apply for a replacement title through your state's DMV (this is the best option)
- In some states, vehicles over a certain age may qualify for a title exemption
- Some states allow junk car sales with alternative proof of ownership for vehicles being scrapped
At Cashh For Junk Cars, we have experience with title issues and can often guide you through state-specific requirements. Contact us to discuss your situation if you're missing a title.
Other Documents You May Need
Depending on your state and situation, you might also need:
Vehicle Registration
A current or even expired registration can sometimes serve as supplementary proof of ownership. This is particularly helpful when you're waiting on a replacement title or in states with specific junk vehicle provisions.
Bill of Sale
While we provide a bill of sale, having your own copy prepared can speed up the process. A bill of sale should include:
- Your information (name, address, phone number)
- The buyer's information
- Vehicle details (VIN, make, model, year)
- Sale price and date
- Signatures from both parties
Release of Liability
This form, submitted to your DMV, notifies them that you've sold the vehicle and are no longer responsible for it. This protects you from liability if the vehicle is involved in accidents or violations after the sale.
Photo ID
You'll need a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.) to verify your identity as the seller.
Special Situations
When There's a Lien on the Vehicle
If there's still a loan on your car:
- Contact the lienholder to request a payoff amount
- Pay off the loan before selling, if possible
- In some cases, we can work with you to arrange direct payment to the lienholder
When the Title Is Not in Your Name (Jumping Title)
"Jumping title" refers to selling a vehicle without first transferring the title into your name. This practice is:
- Illegal in most states
- Can result in fines or legal complications
- Makes it difficult to legally sell the vehicle
If you purchased a vehicle but never transferred the title, you should complete the proper title transfer process before attempting to sell it.
Inherited Vehicles
If you inherited the vehicle:
- You'll need documentation proving your right to the vehicle
- This might include a death certificate and letters testamentary or other probate documents
- Some states issue transfer-on-death titles or have simplified procedures for low-value vehicles
State-Specific Requirements
Each state has slightly different requirements for selling junk cars. Some states have implemented electronic title systems, while others have special provisions for vehicles being sold for scrap. Our team stays up-to-date on the requirements for all 50 states and can guide you through your specific state's process.
After the Sale: Notifying the DMV
After selling your junk car, it's important to:
- File a notice of transfer or release of liability with your state's DMV
- Return your license plates if required by your state
- Cancel your insurance on the vehicle
